On 18 October at the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry, the Appetite for Engineering 2018 event will once again bring the UK food and beverage industry together to debate topical food engineering issues.

Appetite for Engineering provides a stimulating environment for the UK food and beverage industry to network with peers and industry experts while finding out more about the latest engineering technology developments and hearing about the successful strategies that are being employed to overcome typical industry challenges. 

The one-day event will be split into three sessions. The first will focus on technology innovations and will look at how the food industry is preparing for the future through the adoption of automation technologies. It will also cover issues surrounding the digital transformation of food plants and will look at the growing importance of software in this process. In this section delegates will hear from PepsiCo about a successful condition monitoring project and will also find out more about the potential of new technologies such as AI and machine learning. In addition, the session will discuss the effect that Blockchain might have on traceability in the supply chain. Other presentations in this session will be announced soon.

The conversation then moves on to look at how industry is addressing the need to be more sustainable, looking at projects which are helping achieve savings in energy, water and waste.  Delegates will, for example, hear how British Sugar has made some impressive energy savings following a project that set out to ensure the plant did not overproduce compressed air.

Also in this session Eric Partington, regional chair of EHEDG UK & Ireland, will explain the important role of hygienic design, not just for food safety but also for greater sustainability – because equipment and an environment that is easier to clean will also use less chemicals and water, and can also cut cleaning downtimes, helping so can help increase productivity too! Once again more presentations are due to be announced soon for inclusion in this session.

Almost everyone working in food production will understand how difficult it can be to find keen young engineers who want to work in the food sector. Appetite for Engineering 2018 will once again shine the spotlight on the skills issue. In the final session of the day Jacqui Hanbury, a trainer, mentor and coach with Pathway MTC, will look at how thinking errors – from employers, schools and future engineers parents – have posed a problem for the food industry. Using her own experience as an apprentice engineer and her many years working in large industrial companies Jacqui will suggest ways that we can all start to change this.

The day will end on a high note, with a presentation from Jess Hugill, a young engineering apprentice from the Nestle UK York factory explaining how and why she has embraced a career in food engineering. She is currently studying and working on the Level 3 Food & Drink Engineering Maintenance Apprentice Standard… and is loving it!
